Columbia University aims to establish the first Taiwan Studies Center at an Ivy League university by 2028.
The university is currently fundraising with a target of US$10 million by the end of the year to fund the center for five years.
The center will focus on fostering an independent perspective in the study of Taiwan, separate from China studies.
It will collaborate with various schools within the university, including political science, journalism, law, business, public health, and social work.
Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, a former student of Columbia, spoke at the event and praised the initiative as a step toward promoting democracy and learning.
Professor Andrew Nathan, who is leading the effort, emphasized the need for a unique approach to studying Taiwan's politics, economy, history, art, and culture.
